A 48 year old Pikeville man was killed Monday in a mining accident around 4:10 p.m. He was operating an excavator at Double E Augering Mine #3 in the Steele community in eastern Pike County. The machine apparently overturned, killing him. This is the first mining death of 2007, sixteen miners were killed in Kentucky in 2006. Five of those were from a methane gas explosion in Harlan County in May. Pending an investigation the mine is now closed according to authorities.
