Kentuckians with disabilities are growing in numbers according to an article in the Courier-Journal. Only West Virginia ranks higher in it's percentage of people with disabilities. According to the U.S. Census nearly one in four Kentuckians has a mental, physical, sensory or self-care disability. Almost 23 percent of adult residents are limited in activities because of disabilities.

"Some get financial help from the government, with more than 152,000 disabled workers in Kentucky getting Social Security disability as of the end of 2004, and an additional 165,000 receiving money from the federal Supplemental Security Income program.

Although there is some fraud, the vast majority are legitimate claims, said Brent Justice of the Social Security Administration. "
