Plant Fined After Man Loses Both Arms

$88,500.00 is what a Jefferson County company is being fined after an accident in January left an employee without both arms. The company Six Sigma Incorporated of Jeffersontown has 15 days to appeal to the Kentucky Department of Labor. Employees according to state law can sue employers for a workplace injury if they can prove the company intended for them to be harmed. Six Sigma was found to have committed a serious willful violation when it asked the employee to clean out a shredder with a screwdriver without procedures for locking out electricity to the equipment while they were under repair. It also found that in addition to the employee that was critically injured it also put 30 others at risk.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Lee Coleman

Mercer Plant Crane Accident Claims Life

Monday morning a worker was killed in an accident at the Kentucky Utilities E. W. Brown Generating Station Plant in Mercer County. Few details have been released but apparently a worker died when a crane fell on him. Officials would not confirm the identity of the worker or the cause of the accident. This is the same plant a worker died in last month when he fell from a transmission tower at the plant.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Lee Coleman

199 CSX Safety Violations

That was the findings federal inspectors found days after two train crashes in Kentucky. The violations were in the 23 states that the company serves. A state breakdown of violations is not available right now but the list was long. Defective rails, track repairs not made that were known to have problems, cars with loose closures and improper documentation papers. Inspectors have recommended civil penalties which are under review by the Federal Railroad Administration before being sent to CSX. They also found another 3,518 defects which were defined as noncompliance with safety and hazardous-materials rules.

"The violations are rated by the agency as serious violations of federal rules.
According to the agency, inspectors found 17 violations involving tracks, 22 in operating practices, 101 involving locomotive power and equipment, 25 in signal and train control, and 34 in hazardous materials.
Corbin CTA Plant Fire Sends Four To Hospital

Early Wednesday morning a fire broke out at the CTA manufacturing plant in Corbin. The fire broke out about 4 a.m. sending four workers to the hospital. It is unknown at this time the extent of the injuries. The fire was in a high risk area of the plant. The company makes thermal and acoustic insulation for use in cars and trucks. In February 2003 the CTA plant had an explosion that took the lives of 7 plant workers and nearly 40 were injured. The plant is located on Highway 3041 Bypass.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Lee Coleman

Pikeville Miner Killed in Mining Accident

A 48 year old Pikeville man was killed Monday in a mining accident around 4:10 p.m. He was operating an excavator at Double E Augering Mine #3 in the Steele community in eastern Pike County. The machine apparently overturned, killing him. This is the first mining death of 2007, sixteen miners were killed in Kentucky in 2006. Five of those were from a methane gas explosion in Harlan County in May. Pending an investigation the mine is now closed according to authorities.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Lee Coleman

Improved Safety For Social Workers Wins House Approval In Kentucky

After the tragic death last October of Boni Frederick, a social service aid in Kentucky, who was fatally beaten and stabbed when she took a child for a home visit with it's mother in Henderson, a bill has finally been passed that should improve workers safety. The "Boni Frederick Bill" passed calling for about 4.8 million to hire 33 aids, and 76 social workers and clerical staff over the next 16 months. It would also fund 15 centers around the state so children could be visited by parents instead of social workers having to take the child to the parents home, not knowing what they were walking into when taking a child in. It also includes better emergency communications equipment for workers. The boyfriend and mother have both been charged with murder in the death of Boni Frederick.

"Cabinet officials -- who convened a task force to study the social-service system after Frederick's death -- said yesterday that they view the bill as a starting point to improve safety for workers and the families they serve.
"I see this as an encouraging step," said Mark Birdwhistell, the health and family services secretary.
Rep. Tom Burch, D-Louisville, said he believes HB 362 represents an important advance.
"This is the first real legislation we've offered for social workers in my career," said Burch, the bill's sponsor and 22-year chairman of the House Health and Welfare Committee. "Boni Frederick should not have died, and this bill is being dedicated to her memory. Hopefully no other social workers or assistants will die."

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Lee Coleman

Kentucky Among The Worst With Disabilities

Kentuckians with disabilities are growing in numbers according to an article in the Courier-Journal. Only West Virginia ranks higher in it's percentage of people with disabilities. According to the U.S. Census nearly one in four Kentuckians has a mental, physical, sensory or self-care disability. Almost 23 percent of adult residents are limited in activities because of disabilities.

"Some get financial help from the government, with more than 152,000 disabled workers in Kentucky getting Social Security disability as of the end of 2004, and an additional 165,000 receiving money from the federal Supplemental Security Income program.

Although there is some fraud, the vast majority are legitimate claims, said Brent Justice of the Social Security Administration.
