That was the findings federal inspectors found days after two train crashes in Kentucky. The violations were in the 23 states that the company serves. A state breakdown of violations is not available right now but the list was long. Defective rails, track repairs not made that were known to have problems, cars with loose closures and improper documentation papers. Inspectors have recommended civil penalties which are under review by the Federal Railroad Administration before being sent to CSX. They also found another 3,518 defects which were defined as noncompliance with safety and hazardous-materials rules.

"The violations are rated by the agency as serious violations of federal rules.
According to the agency, inspectors found 17 violations involving tracks, 22 in operating practices, 101 involving locomotive power and equipment, 25 in signal and train control, and 34 in hazardous materials. "
