Kentucky Attorney General, Greg Stumbo, announced the filing of a lawsuit against the manufacturer of Oxycontin, a commonly abused narcotic for medical negligence amongst other claims.

The lawsuit alleges the manufacturer, Purdue Pharma, misrepresented the risks associated with OxyContin use and seeks to recover damages suffered county and state governments related to widespread addiction in connection with the drug.

The suit alleges fraud, medical negligence, conspiracy and public nuisance on the part of Purdue Pharma. The suit additionally seeks restitution for state and county governments and demands that a medical monitoring program be put in place to diagnose and treat addiction problems within Kentucky.

In May 2007, Purdue pled guilty to federal felony charges of misbranding the drug with intent to defraud or mislead. Three corporate executives also pled guilty to mislead the public about addictions associated with OxyContin.
