A 19-year-old Lexington man remains in critical condition following a train accident yesterday.

The man was struck by a 31-car train at 4:30 a.m., Saturday. He was on his way home from a Halloween party near Nicholasville Road, according to a close family friend.

An engineer on the train at the time of the accident reported he saw a man jumping in and out of the train track's rail as the train was approaching. The train crew sounded a warning bell and horn, according to a company spokesman. It took quite some time to stop the 5,558-ton train.

At this time it is unclear how fast the train was traveling but the speed limit in that area is 40 mph.

A family friend spoke with three residents who leave close to the tracks. None of them remember hearing the train or horn during the time of the accident. Officials are investigating the accident.
