The CSX train derailment in Bullitt County in January was caused by a broken bolt on a freight car. The broken bolt caused the car not to steer properly and caused it to jump the track on a curve near Brooks, Ky. The freight car is owned by a CSX customer but the railroad is responsible for the maintenance and safe operation of it. The crash forced an estimated 500 people from their homes. Some...

Six weeks later after the train derailment in Brooks, KY, more than a dozen families are still not in their homes. Some say they aren't going back. Some wonder what the appraisal of their homes will be as no one else wants to move there either. Families living in hotels, it's become the normal for fast food since there is no kitchens for some. The train derailment two weeks ago in Brooks, Kentucky still leaves about 15 families locked out of their homes. Some utilities have still not been restored such as gas and water to some of the homes and the Environmental Protection Agency says there is so much equipment it really makes it unsafe for them to return at this time. 4,500 tons of contaminated earth from around the site has been...

I came across an article in the Witchita Eagle that was very interesting as far as bringing to attention just what is in those rail cars that roll through our cities every day. Last week here in Kentucky we had two train accidents in two days with hazardous materials involved. According to the paper 30 rail cars a day come through the heart of Lexington carrying such toxins as chlorine and...

Thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals leftover from the Tuesday CSX train crash in Bullitt County begins. CSX workers began burning it off in a controlled burn. A huge pit of 90,000 gallons of 1, 3-butadiene from three rail cars is where they started. 14 cars caught fire in the crash from the 80-car train that was headed from Louisville to Birmingham, AL. Around 500 people were evacuated some...

A recorder was recovered from the train, and hopefully clues will be found as to why the CSX train derailed in Bullitt County yesterday. This was the second major train wreck for CSX in less than 24 hours in Kentucky. The other train wreck was in Irvine, Kentucky and happened Monday when four runaway rail cars traveled 20 miles before crashing into two parked rail cars. In the Bullitt County...

Wednesday morning the crash site is still burning where a CSX train derailed yesterday morning with 80 freight cars, some of which were carrying hazardous materials. Firefighters used a foam to try to extinguish the fire on a few cars but over all it was to be allowed to burn out. I-65 has reopened but may still have some more closure at some point. The shelter was still open today at Okolona...
