Database of Chemicals and their Toxicity Levels Underway in California

Do you know which chemicals are used to make the toys your children play with or the plastic products that hold your drinks and foods?

An online database of chemicals and their toxicity levels in underway in California, following a new law that took effect in January.

The state Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is creating the database, which will allow consumers to evaluate certain products and decide if they want to purchase them. Another law, enacted last month, will also enable the state to identify and rank chemicals that pose health treats as well as highlight alternatives manufacturers can choose from in place of harmful chemicals.

“There is a lack of information regarding non-toxic products,” says Maureen Gorsen, director of the DTSC. “What are the alternatives to plastics? That is where green material opportunities exist.”

The DTSC has developed a wiki which allows consumers to get involved in the creating of new rules for collecting chemical data and assessing toxicity levels in consumer products. Both laws were the result of the Green Chemistry Initiative launched by the Cal EPA in 2007.

Below are some interesting facts from the DTSC Web site:

The worldwide chemical market grows 3 percent each year, doubling every 25 years.

About 100,000 different chemicals are used to make consumer products today.

Two million plastic beverage bottles are tossed away every five seconds in the United States.

Miner Injured On Conveyor Belt

Saline County Central Dispatch received a call at 12:07 that a miner was trapped on a conveyor belt at American Coal mine on Thursday.

Harrisburg Fire Department brought in a ladder truck soon after the call and, with the help of EMS and fellow miners, carried the man down to a level that the ladder could reach. He was then airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana with a back injury.

New Technology Catches Killer

The murder of two women more than thirty-years ago has been solved by a bit of new technology.

The murderer, already dead by natural causes on death row, was connected to the women by mini STR DNA profiling. It is able to detect DNA in old and small samples.

By taking blood from victim Theresa Clark, and skin cells from beneath the nails of the other victim, Kathleen McSharry, detectives were able to rightfully say that the murders were the work of John Paul Phillips.

Metrolink Train Collision Lawsuit

Grieving parents of a Metrolink Train Collision Victim, Aida Magdaleno, are filing a lawsuit against the company after the operator ran a red light at 42 miles an hour, crashing into a Union Pacific freight train.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The crash was devastating. It killed 25 people while another 138 were injured. On behalf of the parents, Juvenal and Leticia Magdaleno, Paul Kiesel filed a claim against Metrolink.

Keisel says, “The positive train control system would have prevented her death. It would have slowed the train down and taken the human element out of it.”

The system he speaks of is rare due to the 2 billion dollar price tag, but it automatically overrides the errors made by railroad employees.

Kentucky Court Refuses To Allow Lesbian Adoptions

The same appeals court that would not allow lesbian partners to adopt children, allowed a pair to keep their child after one of them was artificially inseminated.

The ruling noted that stepparent adoptions are only allowed when the stepparent is married to the other biological parent. It also noted that same-sex marriages are not allowed in Kentucky.

Uninsured Young Adults Taking Big Risk

An article on KaiserNetwork.org tells us that the Courier Journal reports on the many uninsured adults of Kentucky (and Indiana).

Anywhere from a quarter, to a third, of the Adults are insured… leaving about 394,000 people around ages 20 and 30 without medical insurance. The Courier Journal tells us a few reasons for the high insurance rates for this particular group.

Bipolar Disorder Linked To Older Fathers

A recent study, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, tells us that not only is the mother an important factor in having a healthy baby, but so is the father.

Scientists involved in a Swedish study have found that men over 55 have a 37% chance of having a child who will develop Bipolar Disorder, also known as manic-depressive syndrome, as compared to men who father a child in their 20s.

The disease tends to develop anywhere from late adolescence to early adulthood and can now be linked to the genetic makeup of the father.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Daryl T. Dixon
