Boston Scientific/Guidant Contack Renewal 3 & 4, Vitality and Vitality 2 implantable cardiac defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators have been recalled. This is similar to the recall of the May 2006 but the patient outcomes and failure modes are different. Around 73,000 of these are recalled due to faulty capacitors. This may cause accelerated battery depletion and may reduce the time of the replacement indicator and the end of life to less than three months in the battery. Patients with one of these devices should contact their Dr regarding the next steps to take. There have been no deaths or serious injuries associated at this time. 19 have been confirmed to have the accelerated battery depletion at this time.
