On Friday, Merck & Co. announced they won a product liability case brought against them in the State of Florida by a former Vioxx user who claimed he suffered from a heart attack after taking the recalled product over the duration of nine weeks.

The Florida case is the 11th win for Merck in its outstanding Vioxx lawsuits. The drug maker has lost five cases. A federal judge set aside the judgment in on of their 11th wins, while two other cases have ended in mistrials.

Once a blockbuster product, Vioxx was pulled off the market in September 2004 after a study showed it could increase the risk of heart attack or stroke in patients who used the drug for 18 months or longer.

Since that time, over 20,000 cases have been filed against the drug maker over its handling of the drug. A bulk of the cases have been filed in New Jersey, where Merck is headquartered.
