Faulty Tire Stems Can Lead To Accidents

A recent article has concluded that about 6 million tire valve stems have been improperly manufactured at an Ohio distribution plant and could increase the risk of an accident.

The recall is on a replacement snap-in tire valve -- Model No. TR413 -- manufactured between July and November 2006. Investigators into this issue have concluded that it could possibly be an improper mixture of the rubber used to make the valves. They recommend that you check the valves carefully with a flashlight by moving it around. If you see any visible cracks, pour some soapy water on it and see if any bubbles appear. If so, you need to replace the valves.

At low speeds, the default could cause a gradual decrease in tire pressure, or simply a flat tire. However, at higher speeds, the consequences are more severe. The vehicle will drive strangely for a while, and then, as the tires build up heat, the tire could explode, resulting in possible loss of control.

Experts say that the only guarantee for safety is to have them replaced. Go to where you have your tires serviced and ask them to replace the valves. If they can’t, then find someone who can. In the long run, the price of the valves will be much less than the cost of someone’s life.

ConsumerReports.com linked a fatal SUV rollover in Orlando last year to the faulty tire valve stems. One fatality is enough. It’s up to you to keep yourself and those around you safe.

Age Intervention Eyelash Products Seized by the FDA

The FDA has had almost $2 million worth of Age Intervention Eyelash applicator tubes seized because the product has lead to decreased vision in some consumers. The manufacturer, Jan Marini Skin Research, had 12,682 tubes seized by U.S. Marshals.

The FDA considers Age Intervention Eyelash to be an unapproved and misbranded drug because Jan Marini Skin Research has promoted the product to increase eyelash growth. Before a new drug product may be legally marketed, it must be shown to be safe and effective, and approved by FDA.

The FDA stated that the product is an adulterated cosmetic and contains bimatroprost, which is a drug that increases pressure inside the eyes. Consumers that use this ingrediant in other drugs as well as in the seized product may increase their risk for optic nerve damage because the extra bimatropost decreases the effectiveness of the prescribed drug. If the optic nerve becomes damaged the patient may become blind or start to lose their vision.

The Age Intervention Eyelash can cause people to have swelling of the retina (macular edema) and inflammation of the eye (uveitis).

Jan Marini Skin Research has informed the FDA that the it has stopped manufacturing and distributing all Age Intervention Eyelash products containing bimatoprost in last year.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Merck Wins Vioxx Product Liability Case in Florida

On Friday, Merck & Co. announced they won a product liability case brought against them in the State of Florida by a former Vioxx user who claimed he suffered from a heart attack after taking the recalled product over the duration of nine weeks.

The Florida case is the 11th win for Merck in its outstanding Vioxx lawsuits. The drug maker has lost five cases. A federal judge set aside the judgment in on of their 11th wins, while two other cases have ended in mistrials.

Once a blockbuster product, Vioxx was pulled off the market in September 2004 after a study showed it could increase the risk of heart attack or stroke in patients who used the drug for 18 months or longer.

Since that time, over 20,000 cases have been filed against the drug maker over its handling of the drug. A bulk of the cases have been filed in New Jersey, where Merck is headquartered.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole
