Lewis County Wreck Kills Portsmouth Woman

Early Thursday morning a Portsmouth, OH woman was killed in an accident in Lewis County. Police are still investigating.

According to police, a 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage was driven by Thelma J. Lewis, of Portsmouth, who was traveling east on Kentucky 8 in what police describe as heavy fog, about 9:30 a.m. when she came upon four cars stopped in the roadway for construction. Police said it appeared Lewis did not see the vehicles and did not have time to apply her brakes before striking a vehicle driven by Marilyn K. Wilfong, of Quincy. Wilfong's vehicle struck a vehicle operated by Robert L. Cooper, of Garrison; his vehicle struck one driven by Joe P. Gilbert and Gilbert's vehicle struck a fifth vehicle driven by Gregory H. Mitchell, of Lexington.
