Median cable barriers have prevented at least 20 potential cross-over crashes since installation this summer in Jefferson County on interstates. The barriers kept vehicles from crossing the median into opposing traffic. The system was installed on Interstate 64 between Cochran Hill Tunnels and ½ mile east of Breckenridge Lane, since completion in July the system has been hit for times by vehicles. On Interstate 71 from downtown Louisville to the Jefferson/Oldham County line the system was struck twice while under construction, since completion in mid-September it's been hit 14 times including one incident with a semi-truck. Construction for more of these systems are slated for 2007. Kentucky highway deaths are currently at a five year low in Kentucky.
